Real contact is achieved by using the minimum pressure necessary to communicate effectively. That is the fundamental principle.
It’s not about “good” pressure versus “bad” pressures. The goal is to find out what type of pressure the individual horse prefers, and work with them to reduce discomfort and stress. This will allow effective schooling, so horses can be trained, rather than forced, to perform. Bridle Selection and Fitting
Pressure doesn’t stop at the bit. Recent studies show bridle pressure can be just as concentrated, and just as important, as saddle fit — a perfectly chosen bit can still cause discomfort if the bridle around it is fighting your horse’s anatomy.
The bridle interacts with sensitive areas including the poll, facial crest and nasal bones, the jaw hinge (TMJ), and nerves near the cheekbone. Different bridle styles distribute this pressure differently — a well-fitted, well-chosen bridle spreads load evenly instead of concentrating it on one point.
Fit First, Then Fine-Tune
No pressure profile works if the basic fit is wrong. For bits: check width as well as mouthpiece style — too narrow pinches, too wide lets the bit shift and creates unpredictable pressure. For bridles: allow two fingers’ width under the noseband, and make sure the headpiece sits comfortably behind the ears without pinching — one of the most commonly overlooked fit points. Every horse's head is genuinely unique.
